What I'm Up To

Pass API Data to the Stylesheet with CSS Variables

Both on this website and at work I'm lucky to have pretty broad and varied brand colours palettes to work with. From a design perspective that helps keep things fresh, but it can be a little tricky when it comes to coding certain layouts. For example, consider a grid of company logos where you want to set a different background colour for each item. You could randomise the output easily enough with a little JavaScript, but you'd probably end up with some combinations that didn't look great. Inst...

Living That Journal Life

There are two main problems I have with the content I tend to produce for this site:There isn't enough of it.It isn't personal enough.Yes, I write up the occasional post about travels or big events, but it isn't enough. I really enjoy casting an eye back over the things I've done at the end of the year, but I can't do that properly if I'm lacking good coverage of what I've done in what I've written (does that make sense?). In other words I need to write more about my life. At the same time, I fe...

Orchids After Dark @ Kew Gardens

We've been members at Kew pretty much since we moved to London, primarily (I have to admit) because it's the best place within an hour of where we live to play Pokémon Go during big events, like the monthly Community Days. In spite of that ulterior motive, simply being able to access the gardens has been a lot of fun and I've really enjoyed the membership. However, in two years we've never attended any events at Kew; until, that is, today. It's Valentine's Day and we're both pretty unprepared, bu...

Goldfish @ Printworks

It's my third time seeing Goldfish and the first time with Alison and pretty much all the usual suspects. In other words: it was amazing! Goldfish pulled out a blinder of a set, with several of their newer collaborations (several of which I'm now temporarily addicted to and listening constantly) put alongside a number of tracks from their early albums which are personal favourites but I've never heard live before (Hold Tight!). Incredible, and the follow up DJ set b2b2b2b with Goldfish and four ...

Exploring Bermondsey Street

Who'd have thought it: both Adrian and me set New Year's resolutions to use calendars more, so our first get together actually happened on the date we had planned - despite the tube trying hard to prevent it. Really it was a post-Christmas catchup, great to see him, but we ended up exploring quite a bit around where I work. We started in the Local Tavern, which is much more upmarket than the name or design implies (and, despite boasting of its beer selection, was a little disappointing on tap). ...
